CALIPER 25TH ANNIVERSARY
Caliper's Participation in the Community

Pocahontas Pkwy. Employee Recognition Cookout

In 1/2007 Caliper began working with the Virginia Department of Rehabilitative Services and Virginia Commonwealth University on an initiative to place referrals from the DRS in positions with Commonwealth Departments.  The DRS refers applicants which may require reasonable accommodations to perform work or applicants which may be returning to the workforce after being unable to work.  Caliper Recruiters interview and assess the candidates for opportunities within Commonwealth Departments first and then non-Commonwealth client openings if a state position is not a match.  Both the Virginia Beach and Richmond offices of Caliper have had great success working with the program and building relationships within the various DRS offices in each region.

Jodi Shearer, of Caliper, Inc., shares her perspective on developing relationships with state agencies and the rehab community to assist in recruiting, hiring and accommodating good workers with disabilities.

Virginia is reaching out to recruit and hire a diverse workforce including workers with disabilities. Gov Tim Kaine signed Exe Dir # 8 in the fall of 2007 calling for State agencies to review their recruitment and hiring procedures pertaining to individual with disabilities. One way agencies can hire workers is through a contact with several approved staffing agencies. In Virginia, state agencies work with Caliper, Inc., to recruit workers. This staffing organization is working with VCU-RRTC, VA DRS, and local community rehab programs to place people with disabilities in employment. You will receive information on what has worked, as well as some recommendations to generate more success in the employment of people with disabilities in Virginia government agencies.
